Microalbumin Test (Urine Random)

Report Delivery Time: Same Day

Recommended Gender: Both

Sample Type: Blood

The Microalbumin Test (Urine Random) detects small amounts of albumin in a single urine sample, helping identify early kidney damage. It’s especially useful for diabetes and hypertension patients as a quick, non-invasive screening method.

The Microalbumin Test (Urine Random) is a simple urine test that measures the amount of albumin, a type of protein, in a randomly collected urine sample. Normally, albumin is retained in the bloodstream by healthy kidneys. However, even a small leak of albumin into the urine—known as microalbuminuria—can indicate early kidney damage.

This test is widely used for early detection of diabetic nephropathy and hypertensive kidney disease, often before symptoms appear or other lab values become abnormal. It serves as a rapid, convenient screening tool for those at risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular complications.

Why is the Test Done?

  • To detect early kidney damage in diabetic or hypertensive patients.

  • As part of routine screening for chronic kidney disease (CKD).

  • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment in preventing or managing nephropathy.

  • To evaluate cardiovascular risk associated with protein leakage.

  • For quick screening when 24-hour urine collection is not practical.

Who Should Get This Test?

  • People with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

  • Individuals with high blood pressure (hypertension).

  • Patients with a family history of kidney disease.

  • Those being monitored for early signs of kidney dysfunction.

  • Individuals with obesity, high cholesterol, or other metabolic syndrome risk factors.

Microalbumin Test (Urine Random) Procedure & Preparation:

  • Sample Type: Random urine sample

  • Fasting Required: Not required

  • Preparation:

    • No special preparation is needed

    • Avoid strenuous physical activity before the test

A urine sample is collected at any time of the day and tested for microalbumin and often the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) to improve accuracy.

Understanding the Results:

  • Normal Range: ACR < 30 mg/g

  • Microalbuminuria: ACR between 30–300 mg/g – indicates early kidney disease

  • Macroalbuminuria: ACR > 300 mg/g – suggests advanced kidney damage

Repeated testing may be recommended to confirm abnormal results, especially if no symptoms are present.
