The Alpha Fetoprotein Test  (AFP) is a diagnostic blood test that measures the level of alpha-fetoprotein in the bloodstream. AFP is a protein normally produced by the fetal liver, and its levels are usually very low in healthy adults. However, elevated AFP levels in adults may indicate liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), germ cell tumors, or chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.

In pregnancy, the AFP test is used as part of the triple or quad screen to evaluate the risk of certain fetal abnormalities, including neural tube defects (like spina bifida) and chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome.

Why is the Alpha Fetoprotein Test Important?

  • Liver Cancer Screening: Detects hepatocellular carcinoma in high-risk individuals (especially those with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis).

  • Tumor Marker: Helps monitor the treatment response in patients with liver cancer or testicular cancer.

  • Pregnancy Screening: Identifies fetal abnormalities when combined with other prenatal tests.

  • Liver Health Evaluation: Monitors progression in chronic liver diseases.

Parameters Covered

  • Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein levels measured in ng/mL.

Who Should Take This Test?

The Alpha Fetoprotein Test is recommended for:

  • Individuals with chronic liver conditions such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or cirrhosis.

  • Patients undergoing treatment for liver cancer or germ cell tumors, to track therapy response.

  • Pregnant women (as part of a prenatal screening panel) to check for fetal abnormalities.

  • People with a family history of liver cancer or related disorders.

Test Procedure & Preparation

  • Sample Type: Blood sample.

  • Fasting Required: No fasting required.

  • Turnaround Time: Results are usually available within 24–48 hours.

Understanding the Results

  • High AFP Levels: May indicate liver cancer, germ cell tumors, or pregnancy-related abnormalities. In pregnant women, high levels can point to neural tube defects in the fetus.

  • Low AFP Levels: In pregnancy, unusually low AFP levels may suggest Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities.

  • Normal AFP Levels: Typically found in healthy adults without liver disease or malignancy.
